Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing

Our skin changes over time, losing its youthful look and giving way to brown spots, wrinkles and laxity. In recent years many aesthetic procedures have been available to treat the skin. Laser skin resurfacing yields remarkable, long-lasting results for wrinkled, sun-damaged skin with just one treatment and minimal downtime.

What is Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Fractional Laser skin resurfacing is a revolutionary treatment that combines total solutions in one treatment. A high-energy beam of laser light interacts with the skin’s surface causing the upper layer to peel off and regenerate a  new, healthy skin layer. The laser beam is applied in a fractional pattern, leaving small “bridges” of untouched skin. This technique makes the healing process much faster and enables you to get back to normal activities sooner.

What are the benefits?

The benefits can result in a dramatic effect on the skin in only one treatment:

  • Immediate collagen contraction
  • Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, and scars.
  • Softens deeper frown lines.
  • Noticeably improves skin tone and texture.

The results of the treatment can be maximized with proper skin protection. Most effects of treatment become visible right away, whereas others- such as new collagen formation- build up gradually and result in continued smoothing over time. Therefore, most people continue to show improvement up to six months after the procedure.

Am I a good candidate for fractional laser skin resurfacing?

Fractional laser resurfacing is ideal for patients who want to reduce acne scars, dark spots, pigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles.

The treatment may not be best for patients with very dark skin, severe wrinkles, or excessively sagging skin. Patients who are currently undergoing acne treatment should wait until the doctor clears them for fractional laser resurfacing.

What happens during the consultation?

During the consultation, you will be asked about your complete medical history to ensure that fractional laser skin resurfacing is the best treatment option for your skin. Once you are eligible for the treatment, your skin will be assessed. An overview of the treatment timeline will also be discussed to help you understand the process.

Feel free to ask any questions during the consultation. We will guide you through the whole process to help you achieve excellent results.

What are the dos and don’ts before fractional laser skin resurfacing?

Fractional laser skin resurfacing involves exposing your skin to light energy at a safe level. It is important to prepare your skin properly beforehand.

If you aren’t regularly applying broad-spectrum sunscreen, you may need to start doing so at least four weeks before your fractional laser appointment. During this period, avoid tanning and too much sun exposure.

Avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, blood thinners, and herbal supplements. These can risk too much swelling or bruising.

What is the treatment like?

The procedure involves two steps. First, the physician will numb your skin with a topical anesthetic to aid in treatment comfort. During the treatment, you will feel a warm or prickly sensation as the laser is applied. The procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes, depending on the treatment area and the extent of the concerns being addressed.

What can you expect following the procedure?

You may feel warmth similar to a sunburn following your treatment. You can drive yourself home after the procedure. Follow the skin regimen instructions your physician gave you. With a gentle washing and moisturizing regimen, your photo-treated skin will begin to flake off within two days. After about 4-7 days, your doctor will probably let you wear makeup. Pinkness is often gone in about a week.

What is the recovery process like?

The recovery process is generally straightforward. Most patients can resume their daily activities within a day or two after the treatment. It’s essential to follow post-treatment care instructions provided by your dermatologist.

How long will the results last?

The longevity of results can vary, but many patients enjoy improvements that last for several months to years. Maintenance sessions may be recommended to sustain the effects.

Are there any side effects or risks involved?

While Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing is generally safe, some potential side effects may include redness, swelling, and temporary skin sensitivity. Your dermatologist will discuss these risks and guide you in minimizing them.
