Chin Augmentation
Jump To
Chin augmentation, also known as chin implant surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the jawline and achieve facial harmony. By improving the proportion of the chin to other facial features, it can boost one’s aesthetic appeal and confidence.
At Gardner Facial Plastics, we carefully perform each procedure. Our team aims to provide profile enhancement that complements the unique features of each patient in the most natural way.
What is a Chin Augmentation?
A chin augmentation is a surgical procedure to reshape or enhance a weak chin. Implants are inserted over the lower jaw, creating a stronger and wider chin and slightly lengthening the face.
Some patients opt for temporary injectable fillers to augment a weak chin. While fillers may be economically appealing and provide immediate results, they are temporary and the costs can add up over time.
Chin implants can be a permanent solution and come in a variety of shapes and sizes to match your preferences. Some patients opt for additional surgical procedures, such as rhinoplasty or facial liposuction, to complement a chin augmentation and maximize the results.
Chin Augmentation Benefits
Here are the benefits of chin augmentation:
- Enhances facial balance by making the chin more proportional to other facial features.
- Modifies the profile by projecting a receding chin, achieving a more prominent and distinct appearance.
- Helps define the jawline, offering a more defined and sculpted look, which can also lead to a more youthful appearance.
- Aids in correcting asymmetries in the lower face for a more symmetrical and aligned look.
- Many patients experience a significant boost in self-esteem and confidence as their appearance aligns more closely with their desired look.
- Complements other facial surgeries like rhinoplasty for a comprehensive facial enhancement.
Am I a Good Candidate for Chin Augmentation?
Ideal candidates for chin augmentation are those looking to improve their facial contour and profile. It is recommended for individuals with a weak or recessed chin or anyone seeking to balance the lower extremities of their upper facial features.
A chin augmentation procedure is highly personalized. Good candidates must have realistic expectations that results will be unique for everyone.
What to expect from a Chin Augmentation procedure:
During a chin augmentation procedure offered by Dr. Gardner, you are given either a general or a local anesthetic and light sedation. An incision is made either inside the mouth or beneath the chin, depending on the type of implant you are receiving.
A pocket is created and the implant is placed inside. It is secured in place and then the incision is closed. The procedure is generally completed within 45 minutes unless the bone needs to be moved, in which case the operation may last up to three hours.
Chin Augmentation Post-surgery Expectations
Some bruising and swelling are normal following a chin augmentation and may last for several weeks. This is generally mild and imperceptible within 1-2 weeks. Discomfort and soreness will occur but you should respond well to pain medication.
What Are the Risks of Chin Augmentation?
Other complications are rare but may include numbness, lip weakness, damaged teeth, blood clots, infection, pain, scarring, fluid buildup beneath the skin, and irregular facial contours. If an implant migrates or becomes infected, it may need to be removed.
However, with the correct assessment of patient eligibility and dedication to aftercare, risks or complications are rare.
